Southern Hemisphere

Before coming here I had a basic understanding that in the southern hemisphere it would be winter when we're summer... that the further north you go, the warmer it is... that north is the sunny side of the house.

But there are other things I hadn't considered.  The night sky is completely unfamiliar to me - there is no big dipper to find.  And when hanging laundry I thought the sun would track in a familiar arc from east to west, slightly lower in the south... and I felt quite disoriented when I realized my laundry was in the shade, and the sun was crossing the other side of the sky.

But I think the oddest thing is how my body instinctively reacts to it the weather.  For instance, in Canada if it's warm and dark, you expect it to be the summer, after 9pm... because the sun sets so late in the summer, and the only time it would be warm after dark is in the summer.   But here, it stays quite warm after the sun goes down, so when it's dark and warm I assume it must be late, and I start getting tired.  Tonight after supper we walked along the boardwalk in the dark, and I soon started yawning and thinking it was time for bed.   When I looked at my watch, it was only 6:38!

  1. I had the same issue with getting tired when I was in Hawaii - at 6:30 it would be dark and I would start yawning!!
