Eastlands

We woke up to a beauful day in Gisborne.  Lots of surfers out in the waves.

Lots of driving today.

Lots of beautiful beaches.

This is Tolaga Bay Wharf, the longest in NZ.

Entrance to the Batcave?

Made it to the end.

Long walk back.

Pink leaves in spring... green in summer.

Beautiful coastline.

Half the road collapsed into the ravine.  This is not an uncommon sight.

Thought this old building was neat, so we stopped to check it out.  It was obvious animals had been living in it for ages... and dying in there.  I was taking photos of the old 1950s car inside, not even realizing I was only a couple feet from a dead calf that had been there for a long, long time.  Looked like a skeleton covered in leather... creepy.

Catholic church in Tikitiki.

Known for the maori carvings inside.

Pretty view from the church.

We continued along the coast, and found beach after beach...

This is Ohope Beach... almost there...
Happy to be at our desintation, after a long drive.

Just one more beach...

Just behind that volcano is another one, White Island, that's active right now.  It's an ash volcano, not a lava one, so it's mostly steam.  We didn't make it out there, but it's supposed to be exciting to hike around the crater.

The sky tells us it's time to go.

The Whakatane Sport Fishing Club, where our next hosts are working hard in their resaurant.  We met A&A in Fiji, and were happy to come stay with them for a few days, no hard labour required!  :)

Chilling out in the bar until closing time.
